These quick and easy Garlic Mushrooms on Toast pack so much flavour! They are ready to go in under ten minutes and use just five easily accessible ingredients…most of which you’ll probably already have at home! They’re super affordable, costing under 60p per portion and taste absolutely delicious! You’ve got to give them a go!

These easy garlic mushrooms are the perfect topping for your toast whether it be for breakfast, a brunch dish, or even for lunch. You can eat it any time of the day when you need a quick and delicious light meal. The garlic and sage give a phenomenal flavour when combined with the mushrooms and they go perfectly with a nice piece of toast! I especially love to enjoy this on a nice spring or autumn day, but it is honestly good all year round!
I was inspired to create this recipe as the flavours in my Creamy Vegan Mushroom and Sage Risotto was so popular! The flavours in both these recipe are so versatile! If you didn’t want to top these garlic mushrooms on toast, they also pair amazingly well with my Olive Smashed Potatoes recipe as well as my Easy Slow Cooker Jacket Potatoes… they pretty much pair with anything! Once you’ve made them once, you’ll be making them time and time again!
Ingredients to make Garlic Mushrooms on Toast
- Olive Oil – is used to cook the mushrooms and helps prevent them from sticking to the pan.
- Garlic Clove – is the hero ingredient in this recipe! It adds such a delicious flavour to the mushrooms.
- Chestnut Mushrooms – are my favourite for this recipe. They have better flavour than the white mushrooms and make this dish shine with colour. Got any spare then try making my Mushroom Gravy.
- Dried Sage – adds a nice, subtle, citrus and pine flavour.
- Bread – I use gluten-free (due to allergies) but any bread will work for your toast.

- Olive Oil – Any oil will work to fry up the mushrooms and garlic for this delicious garlic mushrooms recipe. If you aren’t vegan and want to try garlic butter mushrooms, substitute butter for the olive oil.
- Garlic Cloves – If you don’t have fresh garlic, you could use garlic powder, although the flavour won’t be as strong as if you were to use fresh garlic.
- Chestnut Mushrooms – While chestnut mushrooms are my preferred mushroom for this creamy mushroom toast, you could also use cremini mushrooms, white button mushrooms, baby portobello, baby bella, etc.
- Toast – I use gluten-free bread for this creamy mushrooms on toast recipe, but if you aren’t limited on breads, try sourdough bread or another rustic bread.
- Spicy – Add some chilli flakes into the garlic mushrooms sauce for a nice spicy kick. You could also top with freshly chopped chilis for that added spice! If you enjoy spice, check out my Warming Pasta recipe!
- Deluxe – The is the perfect starter if you have dinner guests! There are a few ways you could level up this hearty mushroom dish. Add some gluten-free bread crumbs into the sauce for a variation on breaded garlic mushrooms. Add some fresh thyme or other fresh herbs on top for a more aesthetically pleasing look. Put some vegan cream cheese or mashed avocado on your slices of bread before covering with the sauteed mushrooms for a nice addition. You could also serve them up on homemade Gluten Free Flatbreads.
- Kid friendly – Sometimes, just letting the kids help to make the dish can help them be more open to trying something new! You could also have it to the side or sprinkle some vegan cheese on top to make it a little more kid-friendly. How to make Garlic Mushrooms on Toast
Step 1: Firstly, roughly slice the mushrooms and garlic.
Step 2: Heat a small pan with some olive oil and add the mushrooms and garlic. Fry for 1-2 minutes.
Step 3: Add the dried seasonings and fry for another five minutes, stirring occasionally. Place your bread slices in a toaster or on a griddle pan and top with the garlic mushrooms.
Hint: I like to use the griddle pan as it gives nice charr lines to the toast.
Garlic mushrooms can store in the fridge for 3-5 days. Once they have cooled, store them in an airtight container. You can reheat them in the microwave or in a frying pan on the stove.
Garlic mushrooms are great on toast. They also go well over potatoes or meat. Garlic mushrooms can even be enjoyed on their own!
The first important tip is to make sure the mushrooms are in a single layer and that they have some separation from one another. Then allow them to cook without moving them for 3-4 minutes. This will allow them to crisp up. Then mix them around and let all sides cook as they turn a nice golden brown.
When you’ve purchased mushrooms at the grocery store, you should not wash them. Instead, you can use a dry cloth or toothbrush to wipe off any dirt residue that may remain on them. Washing them can cause discolouration. Also, mushrooms don’t dry well and won’t cook as nicely.
Mushrooms have all sorts of great health benefits! They are full of vitamins and nutrients in addition to helping our immune systems! Garlic has antioxidants and may help prevent cancer, alzheimer’s, and dementia!

Garlic Mushrooms on Toast
- 1 Chopping Board
- 1 sharp knife
- 1 frying pan
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 garlic clove crushed
- 4-5 chestnut mushrooms roughly sliced
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- Pinch salt & pepper
- 4 slices bread (I use gluten-free)
- Firstly, roughly slice the mushrooms and garlic
- Heat a small pan with olive oil and add them to the pan for 1-2 minutes
- Then, add the dried sage and a pinch of salt and pepper and fry for roughly 5 minutes, making sure to stir
- Place your bread into a toaster or onto a griddle pan (which I prefer to get charr lines) and top with garlic mushrooms
