Why this recipe works

Pancakes with chocolate are the ultimate delicious breakfast food! Pancake batters can vary so much, but this one is delicious, on the healthy side, and chocolatey!

Enjoy it with some melted butter, drizzled maple syrup or fresh berries! Did I mention it is cheaper and way better for you than a store-bought pancake mix?

You can even add some protein mix in to make it more filling! Make it a family affair and get your kids off their device and enjoy breakfast together!

Ingredients to make Chocolate Pancakes

Ingredients to make Chocolate Pancakes.
  1. Self-Rising Flour – I used gluten-free flour, but you can use white flour, whole wheat flour, or whatever you have as long as it is self-rising. See tips below for how to make your own.
  2. Cacao Powder – is what gives these pancakes their chocolatey taste.
  3. Milk – I use almond milk to keep it vegan, but you can use whole milk, soy milk, or any other unsweetened non-dairy milk.
  4. Maple Syrup – is a great natural sweetener.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Substitutions

  • Cacao Powder – Dutch-processed cocoa powder or unsweetened cocoa powder can also be used.
  • Flavours – You can adjust the flavour slightly with a pinch of salt or some vanilla extract.
  • Fresh Strawberries – Other fresh fruit like blueberries or raspberries would also be great.

Variations

  • Deluxe – Top with some fresh berries and dollop of cream for some Instagram-worthy pancakes.
  • Kid friendly – Pancakes are already so kid-friendly! Add in the chocolate flavor, and there’s no going wrong! It’s basically like healthy cookies for breakfast. Let your kids pick their toppings – whipped cream, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, strawberry sauce, etc. You can even mix in some milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips for chocolate chip pancakes.

Recipe FAQs

Can you make pancakes without eggs?

Absolutely! Many recipes will call for a large egg, but it is not necessary. All of the ingredients hold together just fine without it and they are still delicious!

How can you make chocolate pancakes healthier?

I use maple syrup as a natural sweetener and cacao powder for the healthiest pancakes. Add some fiber by mixing in ground flaxseed, chia seeds, etc.

Although not as good-looking as yours, delicious all the same! We had them as a dessert with blueberries and ice cream, and we thoroughly enjoyed them. Thanks
