Homemade potato waffles are something you need to try! They are easy to make and so tasty. You can have them any time of day and they are sure to be a family favourite! The total time to make them is about 30 minutes – great for a quick meal.

This potato waffle recipe is perfect for a quick savory snack, a fancy brunch, or even a unique side dish! It’s delicious and easy to dress up or down. The cooking time is just around half an hour. And for those of you who are vegan, never fear! This potato waffle recipe comes without eggs!

If you don’t want to go through the work of mashing potatoes just for this recipe, have them after you have potatoes for dinner! They work great when you use leftover mashed potatoes in place of fresh ones! To make leftover mashed potato waffles just skip to adding the flour and other ingredients.

  1. Potatoes – form the base of this easy dish.
  2. Herb Butter or Plain Butter – I use dairy-free butter, but either way, it adds a delicious flavour and texture.
  3. Garlic Powder – brings a great umami flavour.
  4. Onion Powder – pairs perfectly with garlic powder.
  5. Cream – I use soya to keep it dairy-free.
  6. Cream Cheese – I use a dairy-free brand.
  7. Tapioca Flour or Corn Flour – helps form the potato mixture into a dough and also keep these gluten-free.
  8. Oil – is used for greasing the waffle maker.
  9. Salt and Black Pepper – help to bring out the other flavours.

Substitutions

  • Seasonings – You could use other herbs or seasonings to get the perfect flavour combination to match the rest of your meal.
  • Flour – All purpose flour would also work well, along with other gluten-free flours.
  • Oil – could be replaced with cooking spray.

Variations

  • Spicy – for a spicy potato waffle, add cumin, chili powder, and even green chiles to the mix.
  • Deluxe – There are so many amazing ways to serve these potato waffles. You can top them with bacon, salsa, poached eggs, avocado, beans, cheddar cheese, sour cream, or chives!
  • Kid friendly – Kids may enjoy dipping their waffle in ketchup or another favourite sauce.

How to make Potato Waffles

Step 1: Firstly, prepare your potatoes. Peel and cut them into cubes.

Step 2: Add the potatoes to a pot of boiling water and reduce the heat. Simmer for 15 minutes or until fork tender. Drain and transfer them into a large bowl.

Step 3: Add the butter, garlic powder, onion powder, cream, and cream cheese. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.

Step 4: Mash the potatoes using a potato masher until smooth and well combined.

Step 5: Once you have a smooth potato mixture, fold in the tapioca flour. Stir until you have a well-combined potato dough.

Step 6: Grease your waffle iron and brush it with cooking oil. Scoop around ¼ cup of the batter and place it onto the waffle iron. Close the waffle iron and cook the waffles for 4-5 minutes or until the waffle iron stops to steam. Repeat the process with the remaining potato dough.

Hint: Finished potato waffles should be golden brown.

Leftovers

Potato waffles will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for a couple of days. You can reheat leftover waffles in the toaster or on the stove.

Recipe FAQs

Are potato waffles healthy?

They can be! The main base of it is potatoes, which have vitamins and minerals. If you start topping them with sour cream, cheese, etc., they aren’t quite as healthy, but in and of themselves, they’re good for you!

Can you eat potato waffles cold?

You definitely can! If you want to enjoy one right out of the fridge the next day, go for it! It will be safe to eat. If you want to reheat it, simply pop it in the toaster!

Ingredients 

  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled, cubed
  • 3 tbsp herb butter or plain butter, I opt for dairy-free
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 80 ml cream, I used soya
  • 1 tbsp cream cheese, I used dairy free
  • 3 tbsp tapioca flour, or corn flour
  • Oil, for greasing the waffle iron

  • Grease your waffle iron and brush it with cooking oil. Take around ¼ cup of the batter and place it onto the waffle iron. Close the waffle iron and cook the waffles for 4-5 minutes or until the waffle iron stops to steam. Repeat the process with the remaining potato dough.

To Freeze: Freeze in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Defrost in the fridge or reheat from frozen in a toaster or on the stovetop.
Tip 1: If you don’t have a waffle maker you could make potato pancakes in the oven on a baking sheet or on the stove.
Tip 2: If you have some that like it spicy and others that don’t, you can cook some with the regular recipe and then mix in some chilli powder for the rest!
Tip 3: These are great to make ahead of time and freeze to reheat for a quick breakfast or snack later in the month.
