Recipe Difficulty – Very Easy

Why this recipe works

Sweet potato fries are a perfect healthy side dish. This recipe is guaranteed to be loved by everyone who tries them, plus they are a naturally gluten-free and great to make in a batch.

They’re ready in a fraction of the time that they would take in the oven, with less oil and plus they are crispier and even tastier! There are generally a lot of different ways to cook fries, but this is my favourite by far! This is one of those easy air fryer recipes you’ll want to keep on hand and one you’ll be making time and time again!

Ingredients to make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Ingredients to make the recipe on a white marble background.
  1. Olive Oil – coats the sweet potato wedges, giving them flavour and helping them to crisp up in the air fryer.
  2. Sweet Potatoes – are the star of the show for sure! Keeping this sweet potato chips recipe simple really allows the sweet potatoes to shine. Plus, there is no need to peel or soaking and they are packed full of important vitamins too such as potassium! If you have some spare in the cupboard then do try my Sweet Potato Brownies or Sweet Potato Gnocchi.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Substitutions

  • Olive Oil – While I feel olive oil gives the best flavour, you could use an alternative oil such as vegetable oil, avocado oil, or canola oil for example.
  • Seasonings – I like to keep it simple when it comes to seasonings, with just salt and black pepper. But you are welcome to try different flavour combinations! For example, using teaspoon garlic powder, onion powder, or regular paprika are some great places to start! I added some of my Rosemary Salt to this recipe and it undoubtedly took these sweet potato fries to the next level! Definitely give it a try!

Variations

  • Spicy – Add some of your favourite spices like chilli powder or cayenne pepper in when coating the sweet potatoes in oil for spicier homemade sweet potato fries. Also, consider dipping them in vegan sriracha mayo! I have a great Homemade Vegan Mayo recipe you could try!
  • Deluxe – One way to level up this sweet potato fries recipe is to sprinkle some vegan cheese on top for the last couple of minutes of cook time. Sprinkle some crumbled Crispy Rice Paper Bacon on top and you’ll have some loaded air fryer sweet potato chips that you won’t want to put down! As I mentioned above, adding my Rosemary Salt to them also takes them to the next level too! Also I love dipping them in my Homemade Vegan Sour Cream.
  • Kid friendly – Kids love French Fries. Sometimes it’s a little harder to get them on board with sweet potatoes fries, but never fear! Give them a small bowl with their favourite dipping sauce such as ketchup and watch them enjoy!

Step 4: Give the air-fryer basket a little shake and fry for 5 more minutes or until cooked.

Leftovers

Leftover sweet potato fries can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. The best way to reheat leftover fries is air frying them for another few minutes. You can also add these fries to the freezer and reheat again in the air fryer from frozen in about 5-6 minutes.

Serving

You can serve these sweet potato fries with your favourite proteins like chicken, salmon, beef steak, tofu etc. I love to serve mine with my Salmon Burger recipe, and can also be the perfect accompaniment for these delicious Air Fryer Sausages!

Recipe FAQs

How long does it take to cook a sweet potato in an air fryer?

As you may have noticed in air fryer recipes, the cooking time can depend on a few different things. For my Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips, it takes about 17 minutes in total. This may change based on the size of your air fryer and the type of air fryer you have. Also, if you have thicker fries, you may need to cook them a little longer in order to get perfectly crispy fries.

Why do my sweet potato fries turn out soggy in the air fryer?

Soggy sweet potato fries may be caused by a couple of things. You only need a little oil for crispy sweet potato fries. If you use too much oil, you may end up with soggy fries. I use about 1.5 tbsp of oil for the whole batch – about three sweet potatoes. On top of using less oil, it is also very important to make sure that the fries are not overlapping to end up with that perfectly crispy sweet potato fry.

Are air fryer sweet potato fries healthy?

Yes! Cooking sweet potato fries air fryer style is much healthier than deep frying them. You still end up with a crispy texture, but with a lot less oil. Compared to regular homemade fries in the air fryer, they have about the same calorie count, but sweet potatoes have more fiber and Vitamin A.

Can you make air fryer sweet potato wedges with brown sugar?

Yes! Swap the pepper and salt for some brown sugar and cinnamon for some extra delicious sweet potato fries! Not only is this delicious, but it’s also a totally different way to enjoy sweet potatoes!
