Ingredients to make Vegan Chocolate Mousse
- Dark Chocolate – is always a great choice when you’re looking for a healthy dessert.
- Silken Tofu – helps the mousse to hold its form and still be deliciously creamy without altering the taste.
- Vanilla Extract – is a secret ingredient in many delicious desserts.
- Maple Syrup – is my favourite natural sweetener.
- Cocoa Powder – or cacao powder adds more of that chocolatey flavour necessary in this mousse.
- Salt – helps to bring out all of the other flavours.
- Fresh Raspberries – are the perfect topping to match with this mousse.
See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Substitutions
- Dark Chocolate – While I recommend 80%, use the level of chocolate that you prefer.
- Silken Tofu – Some other options are avocado, coconut cream, coconut milk, or aquafaba (chickpea liquid).
- Maple Syrup – can be replaced with honey or agave syrup.
- Raspberries – Blueberries would also be delicious to top off this chocolate mousse tofu style.
Variations
- Deluxe – If you want to bring this dessert up another level, try adding a dollop of cashew cream on top. You could also add some white chocolate shavings to the dark.
- Kid friendly – You can serve this as more of a parfait recipe if you’d like, with cake on the bottom, mousse in the middle, and some whipped cream on top.

How to make Vegan Chocolate Mousse
Step 1: Firstly, melt the chocolate in the microwave. Check it every 30 seconds until it is fully melted.
Step 2: Add the silken tofu, vanilla extract, maple syrup, cacao powder, and salt. Blend until smooth.
Step 3: Split the mousse between 6 small glasses or ramekins. Allow to set for 45 minutes in the fridge.
Step 4: Mash ½ of the raspberries. Decorate the mousse with the mashed and fresh raspberries. Grate the 10g of extra chocolate and sprinkle it on top to serve.
Hint: When melting the chocolate, stir in between the 30 second increments.
Leftovers
Leftover chocolate mousse can be kept in the fridge in an airtight container for 4-5 days. You can freeze it in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Allow to thaw in the fridge before enjoying. Be sure to store before adding raspberries or extra chocolate.
Recipe FAQs
Not generally, but it can be made vegan! There are a variety of vegan chocolate mousse recipes out there. Some are 3 ingredient, while others have many more. Some are an aquafaba chocolate mousse while others make an avocado mousse. My recipe uses silken tofu as a base with just a few other ingredients leading to an absolutely amazing low calorie high protein dessert.
Mousse is generally a lighter dessert and is not cooked. A pudding recipe, on the other hand, is thicker and does need to be cooked. Both are delicious desserts that can be made gluten free and vegan.
My personal preference is raspberry with some chocolate shavings. I like to mash ½ of them and serve the other ½ whole on top. Some other great options are blueberries, pomegranate seeds, pistachios, or blackberries.
Well, it is still a dessert, so it’s not something you should be eating with every meal! But for a dessert, yes it is! Vegan chocolate mousse uses tofu rather than cream, as it is dairy free. I also like to use maple syrup as a natural sweetener. Dark chocolate has antioxidants in it. Overall, if you’re going to make a dessert, this is a great one to choose!

This was excellent. We used the substitute suggested of avocado as I found our silken tofu was too far out of date to risk and it was glorious! The raspberries are a must as a counterpoint to the truly rich dessert. Will be making this many more times this summer!
LOVE this Lisa 🙂
