Introducing my 4-ingredient Gluten Free Waffles! These dairy free waffles are so delicious and much healthier than the toaster waffles or mixes you’ll find at the grocery store. And they’re so easy to make!

Recipe Difficulty – Very Easy

Why this recipe works

I’ve got a slew of great healthy breakfast recipes on my website, but this is waffle recipe you’ll need! It is great for a quick breakfast as it’s ready to eat in under 10 minutes. If you need an even quicker breakfast, you can make some frozen waffles to easily pop in the toaster.

One of the great things about waffles is they are so versatile! You can add things to the mix and end up with vegan pumpkin waffles (use pumpkin spice) or blueberry waffles. And the sky is the limit as to what you top them with! Try strawberry, raspberry, or banana waffles, for instance! Or you can top them with jam, syrup, or your other favourite toppings.

This was inspired by my Gluten Free Pancakes recipe, and pairs well with this amazing Rice Paper Bacon recipe

Ingredients to make Gluten Free Waffles

Ingredients to make Gluten Free Waffles.
  • Chia Egg – As this is a waffle no egg recipe the chai egg replaces the texture of egg. It is made by combining 1 tbsp of chia seeds with 3 tbsp of water.
  • Plain Flour – I use gluten free flour, but regular works as well. If you have any spare try my Peanut Butter Cookies.
  • Maple Syrup – is an amazing natural sweetener.
  • Unsweetened Milk – I use unsweetened almond milk.
  • Oil – is used for greasing the waffle iron.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Substitutions

  • Chia Egg – If you aren’t opposed to using eggs, a regular egg will work just great.
  • Plain Flour – Opt for gluten-free or normal plain flour. Other flour’s don’t bind as well in these vegan waffles.
  • Maple Syrup – Some common maple syrup substitutes are honey or agave syrup.

Variations

  • Deluxe – For heartier vegan oat waffles, try adding some oats and enjoy oatmeal waffles.
  • Kid friendly – These vegan waffles are the epitome of kid-friendly! Let your kids help make the waffle mix and then top it with their favourite fruits or toppings!

How to make Gluten Free Waffles

chia seeds mixed with water.

Step 1: Preheat waffle maker. Make the chia egg by mixing 1 tbsp chia seeds and 3 tbsp water in a small bowl. Stir and allow to sit for 5 minutes. It will be a gluey texture when it is ready.

Step 2: After the chia egg is ready, combine it with the flour, maple syrup, and milk. Mix it into a waffle batter.

Step 3: Pour half of the mix into the greased waffle machine. Leave the lid open for 1 minute before closing it and allowing it to finish cooking.

Hint: If your batter is too thick, add a little more milk. It should be a bit runnier than pancake batter, but not as runny as crepe batter.

Leftovers

You can refrigerate or freeze leftover waffles. Do so in an airtight container or bag. They will keep in the fridge for a few days or in the freezer for up to three months.

Recipe FAQs

Can you make waffles without egg?

You can! I use a chia egg to make mine. Combine 1 tbsp of chia seeds with 3 tbsp of water. Mix it together and let it sit for 5 minutes. It will make a gluey substance that fulfills the role of a typical egg!

Is there such a thing as vegan gluten free waffles?

There is! You can make waffles vegan by substituting the milk for plant-based milk. There are waffles without milk, but I prefer the taste and texture of waffles with vegan milk. My egg free waffles use chia eggs in place of regular eggs. Then to make them gluten free, I use gluten free flour. Just a few substitutions and you have delicious waffles that are safe for your diet!

How will gluten-free flours change my waffles?

I just use a typical gluten-free flour, so it tastes very similar to the real thing. If you make chickpea flour waffles they’ll be a bit crispier, have a nutty taste to them, and have additional protein. Making oat flour waffles will lead to a fluffier texture more akin to Belgian waffles.

Are waffles healthy?

It completely depends on how you make them! A store-bought mix or one filled with refined sugar is not going to make healthy waffles. I use a refined sugar free recipe that is definitely on the healthy side! With plant-based milk, a chia egg, gluten-free flour, and maple syrup as the sweetener, you have a delicious waffle recipe.

Notes

Step-by-Step Photos: My blog post includes helpful step-by-step photos to help guide you through making this recipe.
Substitutions & Variations: I have included a list of these in the post above.
To Store: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat in the toaster or microwave.
To Freeze: Freeze in an airtight container or freezer baggie for up to three months. Reheat in the toaster or microwave.
Tip 1: Make sure to grease the waffle maker before cooking each waffle.
Tip 2: Don’t open the waffle maker once you close it until it’s ready. If your waffle machine doesn’t have an indicator, watch for the steam to stop. That’s generally a good clue that it’s ready.
Tip 3: I like to NOT put the waffle machine lid down straight away (I wait a minute), this gives the waffle a chance to cook a little first..
