Ingredients to make Smoked Mackerel Pate
- Smoked Mackerel – You’ll want boneless mackerel fillets to start and need to flake them into pieces before starting the recipe. You could use tinned mackerel if in a pinch.
- Plain Yoghurt – I used coconut yoghurt to keep this recipe dairy-free.
- Dijon Mustard – gives a great tang of flavour to this mackerel pate recipe.
- Fresh Parsley – brings a bright green colour and fresh taste.
- Lemon Juice – pairs perfectly with the mackerel, giving a nice citrusy taste to this recipe.
See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Substitutions
- Yoghurt – Cream cheese, sour cream, or creme fraiche would all be good substitutes for the yoghurt.
- Dijon Mustard – Another common ingredient to bring a tang to a smoked mackerel recipe is horseradish sauce.
- Parsley – Other fresh herbs such as dill, spring onions, or chives would also be good.
Variations
- Spicy – Mix in some cayenne pepper for a spicier pate. You could also use a spicy horseradish sauce in place of the Dijon mustard.
- Deluxe – If you want to try some more flavours, try adding in garlic, paprika, or horseradish sauce.
- Kid friendly – If your kid hasn’t tried mackerel recipes before, this is a great way to introduce them! Let them determine how much they get as they dip in pieces of bread or crackers.

Recipe FAQs
There are so many great options for this! At breakfast, you can have it with an egg on toast. For lunch or a snack, it’s great as a dip. It can serve as an appetizer on crusty bread or crackers. It even goes great on a jacket potato for a nice dinner!
Absolutely! Mackerel is an oily fish, which is full of omega-3s. These are good fats that work to help your brain and heart. For the cream, I use yoghurt, which is a healthier option than cream cheese or mayonnaise. Overall, it’s a very healthy dish!
It is! When you buy smoked mackerel from the store, it has already been cooked by the smoke. Some people may like to give it a little bit more cooking, but it is not necessary.
Yes! If you freeze it in individual servings, it makes them so easy and convenient for a quick lunch or snack. Pull them out of the freezer on the morning you’d like to enjoy it and it should be ready to serve by lunch! You’ll want to give it a good stir to make sure everything melds well.
