We all know that pizza is great all year round. This super easy homemade pizza sauce is going to be a new favourite! This best pizza sauce is made from mostly pantry staples like tomato paste and canned tomatoes is easy to whip up at any time!

It tastes amazing and goes perfectly on homemade pizza dough. It is also gluten-free, vegan, and refined sugar free.

You can even batch cook this easy pizza sauce recipe and freeze it down for even more convenience on pizza night.

If pizza isn’t your thing, this also makes a great pasta sauce! It has an amazing balance of garlic, herbs and tomato flavor.

Ingredients to make Pizza Base Sauce

  1. Tinned Chopped Tomatoes – form the base of this easy pizza sauce.
  2. Tomato Puree – helps to thicken and add flavour.
  3. Dried Basil and Oregano – pair together perfectly for this savoury sauce.
  4. Garlic Cloves – should be crushed and are the perfect balancing flavour in this sauce.

Variations

  • Spicy – For a spicy pizza sauce, add your favourite spices or a generous amount of black pepper, I love adding red pepper flakes.
  • Deluxe – This comes down to your pizza topping! Spread this on your pizza crust and top away! Add all of your favourite toppings such as parmesan, chicken, extra-virgin olive oil etc. Or keep it simple with a Margherita pizza and enjoy! You could also add in fresh basil, chilli or onion powder. 
  • Kid friendly – Add your kid’s favourite toppings – even if it’s just cheese – or use this sauce as a spaghetti sauce. See how many different ways you can use it! If they prefer a smooth pizza sauce then just add to a food processor or blender for 20 seconds until smooth.

How to make Homemade Pizza Sauce

Step 1: Combine all of the ingredients into a large pot and stir.

Step 2: Simmer on low/medium heat until it starts to thicken. This will take around 10 minutes.

Leftovers

Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 7 days or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Reheat in a pot/pan over low heat until piping hot or covered in the microwave. You may need to add some water to loosen the sauce.

Ingredients 

  • 2 canned chopped tomatoes, (800g or 28oz)
  • 2 tbsp tomato puree
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 small garlic cloves, crushed
  • pinch salt

Instructions 

  • To a large pot add all the ingredients above and stir.
  • Simmer on a low/medium heat until it starts to thicken (roughly 10 minutes).

Tip 1: If you’re anything like me then you don’t like smooth pizza base sauce. It needs a bit of chunkiness to it. This recipe is great for that! If you prefer it smoother, blend the chopped tomatoes before cooking.
