Recipe Difficulty – Very Easy

Why this recipe works

This homemade maple dijon dressing is perfect for various salads. It goes great with a classic green salad in the summer or with some added harvest vegetables to dress up a fall salad or your favourite winter salads.

The pure maple syrup gives a bit of sweetness and the vinegar and tangy dijon mustard give a nice sour flavour. They come together for the perfect vinaigrette recipe.

One of the great things about making your own homemade salad dressing is that you know what goes in it! When it comes to store-bought dressings, you may not even recognise some of the listed ingredients. Another benefit to making your own dressings is that you can adjust the ingredients to match your tastes. This dijon vinaigrette was inspired by the dressing on my Three Bean Salad recipe, and is a match made in heaven with my Prawn Salad recipe.

Ingredients to make Maple Dijon Dressing

Ingredients to make Maple Dijon Dressing.
  1. Maple Syrup – Having a sweet maple syrup in the dressing gives it the perfect touch of sweetness. I definitely recommend real maple syrup.
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar – brings this into the tangy dressing realm.
  3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil – forms most of the base of this dijon vinaigrette dressing.
  4. Dijon Mustard – is the best mustard flavour for this maple mustard dressing.
  5. Onion Powder – gives a great oniony flavour that is the perfect match for this maple salad dressing.
  6. Garlic Powder – less powerful than fresh raw garlic and almost always enhances a good dish, and this maple syrup vinaigrette is no exemption!
  7. Salt and Black Pepper – finish off this perfect vegan dressing.

Substitutions

  • Maple Syrup – If you don’t love the flavour of a maple dressing, honey or agave syrup are some other great sweeteners. Honey mustard is a popular flavour combination! If you wanted it a little bit less sweet, you could even add lemon juice for a lemon dijon dressing.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – can be replaced with cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar, or even balsamic vinegar.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil – You could use any neutral oil such as avocado oil or vegetable oil.
  • Dijon Mustard – If you don’t have regular Dijon mustard, you could use a whole grain mustard with this maple vinaigrette dressing.

Variations

  • Spicy – For a spicy take on this simple dressing, try adding in a bit of crushed red pepper.
  • Deluxe – This all depends on what you put in the salad! You can keep it simple with some green leaves or make more of a harvest salad with delicious fall vegetables added in. This is a good salad dressing to put on any vinaigrette salad. If you aren’t vegan, you could even use this with a roast chicken or bacon salad.
  • Kid friendly – if they prefer a sweeter dressing, increase the maple flavour and downplay the rest of the ingredients.

Great recipe, quick and easy to make, and the addition of garlic and onion powder makes it very tasty. I didn’t have any olive oil so used walnut instead. Will now be my go-to dressing

Absolutely gorgeous! I had it over veg and vegan salmon fillets and then I’ve made it again and marinated my tofu with it for snacks. Fab recipe, as always!
