Why this recipe works
This Prawn Stir-Fry is great all year round! The rich flavours in the quick stir fry sauce mixed with the fresh vegetables and delicious prawns can’t be beat. When you think seafood or Asian food, you may think it’s going to be complex. Even more so if it’s both! This Shrimp and Broccoli Stir Fry, however, is so easy! And no need to marinade anything.
One of the awesome things about stir fry is how easily it can be altered! It’s flexible as you can adjust the proteins and vegetables in addition to what you serve it with! So you can make it into a Prawn Stir Fry Noodles or Prawn Rice Stir Fry.
Ingredients to make Prawn Stir Fry
- Sesame Oil – You can use light or toasted, though toasted has a stronger flavour.
- White Onion – is a universally wonderful addition to savoury dishes.
- Garlic Clove – adds a great umami flavour.
- Ginger – is both peppery and sweet.
- Green Beans – can be fresh or frozen. If they are frozen, thaw them before starting this recipe.
- Broccoli – adds a great texture and flavour to this stir fry.
- Prawns – can be raw or cooked for this recipe. I prefer to use king prawns but any will work for this.
- Tamari – is essentially a gluten free version of soy sauce.
- Sweet Chilli Sauce – gives a little bit of heat and sweetness.
- Sesame Oil – has a nutty, earthy taste that works beautifully with the recipe.
- Cornflour – helps to thicken the sauce.
- Water – balances out the sauce.
See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Substitutions
- Sesame Oil – You could use Olive Oil or vegetable oil instead, though it doesn’t add the same flavour.
- Vegetables – You can add or substitute vegetables in this dish. Some good options are snow peas, broccolini, shallots, zucchini, peppers, carrots, and spring onions.
- Tamari – Just opt for soy sauce if you’re not gluten-free.
- Sweet Chilli Sauce – Add a splash of honey or maple syrup for the sweetness and some chilli flakes for the added spice.
Variations
- Spicy – Add some sriracha and chilli flakes for a spicier stir fry.
- Deluxe – To add an additional depth of flavour, you could add a splash of oyster sauce or fish sauce. Alternatively, you could brighten it up with a bit of lime juice. Top your finished king prawn stir fry with sliced green onions.
- Kid friendly – Make this shrimp stir fry a bit sweeter with a little brown sugar. And reduce the spice by removing the chilli sauce. You can also swap the shrimp for a protein your kid prefers.
How to make Prawn Stir Fry
Step 1: First, peel the ginger and then thinly slice the onion, garlic, peeled ginger, and broccoli.
Step 2: Now heat 1 tbsp sesame oil in a large skillet, frying pan, or a wok over medium-high heat. Toss in the onions, ginger, and garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring for 3 minutes.
Step 3: When your veggies are fragrant, add beans, broccoli and prawns. Stir well and cook, stirring for 3 minutes if the prawns are precooked. If they’re raw, cook for 5 minutes until they turn pink.
Step 4: In the meantime, prepare the sauce; whisk together soy sauce or tamari, sweet chili sauce, sesame oil, cornflour, and water in a small bowl.
Step 5: Pour the sauce to the skillet with the prawns and cook until the sauce thickens, but not too thick. It usually takes around 1-2 minutes.
Hint: If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water.
Leftovers
Storage of leftover stir fry is easy! Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or in a skillet. Remember that prawns can only be reheated once. If you used cooked prawns in the original meal, you should not reheat the leftovers. To Freeze: I don’t recommend freezing this recipe.
Recipe FAQs
The most common thing to serve with prawn stir fry is rice or noodles. You could also wrap it up in a lettuce wrap for a healthier option.
It depends. If you use fresh prawn, then you are able to reheat it one time. You can do so in the microwave or on the stove. If you use pre-cooked prawns originally, they are already being reheated once when you cook the recipe, so they can’t be reheated.
